Summary You will serve as a Boiler Plant Operator in the NAVFAC MIDLANT, PRODUCTION DIVISION of NAVFAC ENGINEERING CMD MID-ATLANTIC. Responsibilities Operate boiler with responsibility for the operation of all equipment in the boiler plants during the shift. Fire/operate gas‑fired and multi‑fuel boilers with capacities up to 60,000 pounds of steam per hour, igniting boilers by electronic controls. Regulate oil temperature in storage tanks. Operate as roving patrol, maintaining hourly logs of all operations. Qualifications Although a specific length of time and experience is not required for most trade and labor occupations, you must show through experience and training that you possess the quality level of knowledge and skill necessary to perform the duties of the position at the level for which you are applying. Qualification requirements emphasis is on quality of experience, not necessarily the length of time. Applicants will be evaluated on the basis of the level of knowledge, skills, abilities and/or competencies in the job elements and screened for minimum eligibility. The screen‑out elements for this position are: Monitoring/evaluating performance of boiler and auxiliary systems (e.g., boiler temperature, pressure, water levels, chemicals or fuel) and making adjustments to maintain system requirements. Assisting with plant logs, laboratory records, and quality control records to document operation and maintenance on a steam plant. Adjusting valves, controlling pumps, and regulating pressure of atomizing burners, dampers, and fans to maintain an economical fuel‑to‑air ratio. Reading gauges and boiler water level indicators to confirm equipment is functioning normally. Additional qualification information can be found at: Additional Information The position is designated as mission essential (ALPHA) and personnel may be required to report for duty or be held in a duty status to provide support before, during, or after special emergency situations such as destructive weather, disasters, or periods of increased security threat. This position will require shift work at odd hours. The incumbent must be able to work overtime as required and must be able to wear and use all required personal protective equipment (PPE) to meet duty requirements (safety glasses, safety shoes, earplugs, hardhat).
