Job Overview
The Nursing Assistant (NA) acts as a caregiver for residents during their scheduled shifts in long-term care settings. This role involves delivering resident-focused nursing care and assisting with daily living activities under the guidance of a registered nurse (RN). The NA is responsible for providing age-appropriate care that addresses both the physical and psychological needs of residents as outlined in their care plans.
As a vital member of the nursing team, the NA is expected to adhere to infection prevention protocols and the proper use of Personal Protective Equipment (PPE). Responsibilities include:
- Assisting with essential health care tasks such as bathing, toileting, grooming, dressing, and undressing.
- Obtaining and documenting vital signs.
- Offering psychosocial support and personal care to assigned residents.
- Helping residents with transfers, repositioning, and ambulation using appropriate techniques and equipment.
- Facilitating range of motion and passive exercises.
- Contributing to food preparation and ensuring a pleasant dining experience for residents.
- Assisting residents during meals and providing hydration and nutritional supplements as needed.
The NA also supports nursing staff with procedures when necessary, documents resident interactions and care outcomes, and communicates any changes in residents' conditions to the charge nurse. Additional duties include collecting non-invasive body fluid samples, gathering vital signs, and maintaining cleanliness in residents' living areas through housekeeping and laundry services. The NA may also assist with wellness and recreational programs, encouraging resident participation, and may engage in departmental committees as required.
Qualifications
- A high school diploma or general equivalency diploma (GED) is preferred but not mandatory.
- Must be at least 16 years old. Previous experience as a clinical or nursing assistant in long-term care is advantageous.
- Certification as a Certified Nursing Assistant (CNA) is required, either through the State Board of Nursing or by obtaining certification within four months of starting the position while enrolled in a training program. CNA training and certification will be provided by the facility.
- Completion of annual department-specific competency testing and maintenance of continuing education credits is necessary, with a minimum of 12 hours required each year.
- For applicable states, registration with the Unlicensed Assistive Person (UAP) Registry is required.
- This position may require classification as a Sanford Category II Driver, necessitating a motor vehicle report and proof of a valid driver's license, along with medical qualifications to perform essential driving functions as per organizational policy.
