GENERAL SUMMARY

This is a position in treaty rights enforcement established to protect Treaty Rights resources primarily by investigating reported and suspected violations of the Nisqually Tribal codes, Annual Fishing/Hunting Regulations, and Emergency Regulations.

PRIMARY RESPONSIBILITIES

Primary responsibilities are the basic job duties that an employee must be able to perform. This list of responsibilities is intended to be representative of the duties performed within this classification. • Patrol usual and accustomed areas within the exterior boundaries of the Nisqually Indian Reservation by vehicle, foot, or watercraft to enforce, deter and detect violations of treaty rights ordinances and regulations and other crimes.
• Perform basic law enforcement duties to include effecting arrests, forcibly if necessary; pursuing and subduing individuals; and securing crime and collision scenes. Serve warrants and legal process. Conduct visual and audio surveillance for extended periods of time. Exercise independent judgment in determining when to detain, search, and arrest; and the appropriate level of force required in any situation. Respond to crime reports; interview victims, witnesses, and suspects; and gather evidence. Complete incident and arrest reports.
• For Geoduck monitor only: Perform investigative dives on the commercial fishery and provide assistance to the fleet if needed.
• Operate a law enforcement vehicle during day and night, in emergency situations involving speeds in excess of posted limits, in congested traffic, and in variable and adverse road and weather conditions.
• Effectively perform duties, and responds and communicates appropriately, when confronted by individuals who may be antagonistic, hostile and combative.
• Provide a variety of community services related to law enforcement such as conflict mediation, victim referral, and providing relief to commissioned law enforcement personnel in transporting prisoners, animal control calls for service, and processing reports/records.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS Education and Experience

• High School diploma or GED equivalent.
• Must be at least 21 years of age at time of appointment.
• Must have a valid driver's license and be insurable under the Tribe's insurance policy.
• Must have an acceptable ranking on an examination based on knowledge, skills, and abilities to include an oral, written, and physical agility exam.
• Must have no felony convictions or series of offenses of a minor nature which would lend them to establish a pattern of criminal behavior, or any criminal instances concerning moral turpitude.
• Must be able to pass a thorough background investigation, polygraph and psychological evaluation, and medical exam.
• Must successfully qualify with a duty firearm prior to performing the duties of this position.
• Acceptance to and successful completion of the FLETC Academy or equivalent academy is a condition of continuing employment.
• For Geoduck Monitor: Open water SCUBA (Self-contained Underwater Breathing Apparatus) certification or the ability to obtain certification within 90 days of hire.
• Must be familiar with operation of land/watercraft assigned to the Nisqually Tribal Police Department or be capable of learning the operation within 30 days of hire.

PHYSICAL DEMANDS

The physical demands described here are representative of those that must be met by an employee to successfully perform the primary responsibilities of this job.

This position has a variety of physical requirements of varying degrees based on numerous differing work circumstances. Required physical activities include walking, standing, sitting, digital dexterity, talking, hearing and seeing. A Police Officer will assist in any emergency situation, and must maintain physical ability to effect a forcible arrest or deal with physical, confrontational or combative situations including use of reasonable force up to and including deadly force. Required physical activities during those times are running, jumping, balancing, climbing, crawling, kneeling, bending, stooping, twisting, crouching, reaching, lifting, carrying, dragging, throwing, pushing/pulling both objects and people. A Police Officer must be able to clearly distinguish and identify colors, accurately and safely discharge a firearm (either hand) with unassisted vision, safely drive a vehicle with unassisted vision, clearly discriminate electronic, mechanical and human sounds, and operate other required equipment in a safe and lawful manner for the protection/safety of the public, self and of other employees. Incumbents must be able to wear protective equipment as required by the department and must be able to use equipment associated with a jail environment in addition to operation of a personal computer and related office equipment necessary to perform the primary responsibilities of the job.
