Overview

General Manager, Operations at Progress Rail, A Caterpillar Company. Oversees all manufacturing in one or more facilities on a day-to-day basis and works with multiple teams to resolve issues. Responsible for daily shop activities, production, and financial responsibilities. Ensures production targets are met and manages costs to maximize profits.

Responsibilities

• Provides oversight and support for operations in achieving daily/monthly production goals.
• Prioritizes worker safety by overseeing training plans and equipment, and ensuring safe practices.
• Collaborates with quality, engineering, and manufacturing to drive continuous improvement; provides feedback and approval on improvement initiatives.
• Monitors daily efficiencies to ensure correct work allocations and optimal utilization.
• Sets and enforces policies and processes.
• Plans for long-term growth through capacity planning; reviews status of current and future production orders; collaborates with the supply chain management team.
• Forecasts and maintains monthly budget; coordinates with accounting to drive profitability.
• Manages capital improvement projects.
• Works with engineering and quality to meet or exceed KPIs; resolves quality alerts and implements corrective actions.
• Develops and presents project and operational reports for senior leadership.
• Follows Caterpillars Code of Conduct and company values.
• Prevents constraints that negatively impact customer deliveries.
• Performs additional job-related duties as assigned.

Education / Training

• Bachelors degree with 7+ years of experience across multiple functions (e.g., engineering, production, scheduling, supply chain, quality control).
• Locomotive, signal, or other railroad manufacturing industry experience is a plus.

Qualifications And Experience

• Ability to integrate complex business processes in a high-volume manufacturing environment.
• Executive-level leadership capabilities.
• Extremely organized with strong written and oral communication skills.
• High analytical ability for problem solving at multiple levels.
• Understanding of quality tools used in manufacturing; Lean manufacturing experience.
• Experience with financial planning, budgeting, forecasting, and cost control.
• Understanding of scheduling and manpower planning.
• Understanding of human resources practices (hiring, counseling, payroll, benefits).
